Artemis III: Delayed Beyond 2027?

NASA has already pushed the Artemis III target date back several times, now officially aiming for mid-2027. However, the mission relies on three major components that are facing major technical hurdles: the readiness of the Orion spacecraft, the development and certification of the new Axiom spacesuits, and, most critically, the flight readiness of SpaceX's Starship Human Landing System (HLS).

Starship Readiness

The strong 'Yes' vote is driven by the Starship HLS requirement. For Artemis III to meet its current mid-2027 date, Starship must successfully complete numerous complex, high-stakes orbital refueling demonstrations and crewed-landing rehearsals well in advance. Given the history of delays in high-stakes space hardware development, the market believes a public announcement pushing the landing past the end of 2027 is highly probable.
